Characters (letters) are easy to grasp for a newly sighted adult than other stuff.

Because, (I dare to say), characters (in a language), is the visual mean to communicate, physicallyze in some way, what we think.

Akin to what staring into a screen showing a program code does for the programmer. It is merely the visual cue for the whole process we are working with.
